In a heartwarming ceremony that brought smiles and hope to many, the National Lottery Good Causes recently honored Elvire Mavusi Matu for her tireless dedication to her community. Known for her unyielding spirit and commitment to social causes, Elvire truly exemplifies what it means to be a “game changer.”
At just 14 years old, our founder Elvire Mavusi Matu took her first steps towards transforming her community. In 2012, with the support of the Salvation Army Barking Church, she founded Konverse Dance Crews (KDC), a youth-led project based in Barking and Dagenham, to provide a safe space for young people in an area heavily impacted by rising gang violence. Over the past 12 years, KDC has grown into a beacon of hope and opportunity, welcoming over 900 members through our workshops, school programmes, and regular classes. Beyond dance, KDC offers opportunities for training, qualifications, and paid employment.
Elvire’s vision for Konverse Dance Crews goes beyond choreography. It’s about creating a nurturing environment where young people can develop their talents, build leadership skills, and find their voice. Her relentless commitment sees her dedicating every evening and weekend to the organisation, while also working full-time at a local school. Her passion and hard work have made her a true pillar of her community.
